The PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID -2 day qualification is a competency based course, designed to train individuals in both theoretical and practical aspects of First Aid for those involved in caring for young children and infants. 


This course is ideal for teachers working in Early Years primary education, day and private nurseries, before and after school clubs and registered child minders. This qualification meets the standards required by Ofsted Early Years and the Chidlcare Register


The DFE Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage recommends at least one person with a full ( 2 day ) PFA qualification must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present, and also on outings. The 2 day trained staff can be supported by staff holding the emergency PFA certificate

Course Content
On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

  • understand the role of a first aider including reference to: 

    • the need for recording incidents and actions
    • planning for first aid emergencies involving infants and young children
    • dealing with emergencies involving infants and young children
    • resuscitating infants and young children
    • recognising and dealing with shock in infants and young children
    • recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in infants and young children
    • recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in infants and young children
    • recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to burns and scalds in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to choking in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to suspected fractures in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in infants and young children
    • recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to eye injuries in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to bites and stings in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to the effects of extreme heat and cold in infants and young children
    • responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in infants and young children
    • recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of infants and young children with chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, sickle cells anaemia, diabetes
    • recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illnesses in infants and young children

Course Exam
You must, in order to gain a certificate: 

  • attend all course hours
  • Successfully complete the ongoing assessment to the satisfaction of the trainer


A Paediatric First certificate with AED, which is valid for three years, will be awarded to all successful candidates
