Course Description

Basic Level 1

This level is aimed at complete beginners with no previous knowledge of the target language (TL).  At this level, you will discover the rules that govern the sound system of your chosen target language. You will learn to interact with your peers and other interlocutors, in a simple way, by asking and answering simple questions about various personal matters, such as yourself, where you live, people you know, and things you have, like or dislike.

By the end of this Level, you will have developed the confidence to initiate a basic conversation and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on familiar topics and be understood by a sympathetic TL interlocutor.

Basic Level 2

This level is aimed at students who are beginning to develop the confidence to use the TL to function in social situations, such as greeting people, using simple everyday polite forms of greeting and address, and asking how they are and react to news.

By the end of this level, you will have developed the skills and confidence to handle short social exchanges; ask and answer questions about what you do at work and in your free time; make and respond to invitations; discuss what to do, where to go and plan to meet; make and accept offers. You will also have acquired the language skills to make simple transactions in shops, post offices or banks; get simple information about travel; use public transport, ask for basic information, ask and give directions, and buy tickets.

Independent Level 1

This level is suitable for students who have acquired the basic skills to maintain a basic conversation, i.e., they can express themselves successfully in a limited number of contexts and follow the main points of extended discussion around them, if speech is clearly articulated in standard dialect.

After you have completed this level, you will have developed the necessary confidence to sustain a conversation that is comprehensible, but you may still have to pause for grammatical and lexical planning and repair, especially in longer stretches of supported language production.

Independent Level 2

This level is suitable for students who have acquired the skills to maintain a broadly unrehearsed interaction articulated in standard dialect. They can express what they want to say in a range of contexts and follow the main points of extended discussion around them.

After you have completed this level, you will have developed the necessary confidence to sustain a conversation. You may still have to pause occasionally for grammatical and lexical planning and repair, especially in longer stretches of free production. You will also have developed the linguistic ability to cope flexibly with everyday problems, such as making travel arrangements through an agent or when travelling.  You will have developed the confidence, fluency, and spontaneity to enter unprepared into conversations on familiar topics.
