Certificate in the Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand-Arm Vibration

Certificate in the Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand-Arm Vibration

This four day short course will lead to a certificate awarded by the Institute of Acoustics. It is presented in the course of one week, with teaching from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day and an examination on the Friday afternoon.

MODULE CONTENT
The course will cover the following areas:

Identification of HAV hazards and assessment of risk

Legislative requirements

Vibration exposure control techniques and identification of areas where vibration reduction is required.

Assessing the effectiveness of vibration control measures

Evaluation of daily vibration exposure

Use and limitations of personal protective equipment

ASSESSMENT
An examination takes place on the Friday afternoon, and a case study has to be submitted within one week of the course finishing.
The Syllabus covers the health hazards associated with exposure to hand-arm vibration and approaches to the measurement, assessment and reduction of that exposure.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no formal entry requirements but it is desirable for participants to have experience in occupational health and safety, in noise or vibration measurement or in a related field. The ability to do calculations with the aid of a scientific calculator will be required on the course.

Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement

Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement

The Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement is awarded by the Institute of Acoustics to those who successfully complete a course at an accredited centre such as Leeds Beckett University.
It is aimed at those who manage environmental noise emissions and at those responsible for enforcing environmental noise standards

MODULE CONTENT
The syllabus covers:

Basic noise concepts.

Instrumentation for environmental noise measurement.

Environmental noise indices and measurement methodology.

Noise propagation.

Legislation and codes of practice relating to noise from road, rail and air traffic, mineral extraction, planning and construction.

ASSESSMENT
The Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement is awarded by the Institute to those who complete the five-day course, pass a 2½ hour exam, and successfully complete a practical test. The exam and practical test are normally conducted at the end of the course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
We have been teaching this course since 1998. Participants have included Environmental Health Officers, consultants and those working for mineral extraction and transport undertakings.
A certain amount of calculation is involved, and although this can be done by means of published charts and diagrams, we recommend the use of a scientific calculator (i.e. one with a LOG key)

Certificate of Competence in Workplace

Certificate of Competence in Workplace

The Certificate of Competence in Workplace Noise Risk Assessment was originally introduced by the Institute of Acoustics in response to the 1989 Noise at Work Regulations. The Institute works with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure the course content is appropriate and up-to-date, and it insists on high standards from accredited centred such as Leeds Beckett University.

MODULE CONTENT:
The syllabus covers:
The 20 Control of Noise at Work Regulations
Sound and how it affects human beings
The design of workplace noise surveys
Noise measuring instrumentation
Hearing protection
Noise reduction techniques

ASSESSMENT
The Certificate of Competence in Workplace Noise Assessment is awarded by the Institute to those who complete the five-day course, pass a 2½ hour exam, and successfully complete a practical test. The exam and practical test are normally conducted at the end of the course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
We have been teaching this course since 1992. Participants have included Health and Safety Managers, Occupational Hygienists, consultants and others responsible for the management of noise exposure at work.

A certain amount of calculation is involved, and although this can be done by means of published charts and diagrams, we recommend the use if a scientific calculator (i.e. one with a LOG key). As well as this, participants are recommended to have a copy of the HSE publication Controlling Noise at Work (HSE Books, 2005 £13.95).
