The course will inform coaches of the specific impairment groups (Wheelchair, Visually Impaired, Deaf and Learning Disabilities), providing coaches with a basic level of knowledge and increasing confidence to deliver traditional and modified versions of tennis to pupils of all disabilities. The course will also look at practical implications for coaches to assist them in developing either an integrated programme or to introduce specific disability sessions.

The Disability Awareness Course is aimed at accredited Level 2 and above coaches, who have an interest in coaching tennis players with a range of disabilities and who wish to deliver an inclusive tennis programme. The course also forms part of the LTA Level 3 coaching qualification.

The Disability Awareness Course is a six-hour course which raises awareness of the different types of disabilities and covers information on how to coach players with different abilities in an effective and appropriate way. The course involves a large practical element which often involves coaching players with disabilities.

By the end of the course, participants should have a better understanding of how and why disabled people should be integrated into tennis. Topics covered in the course include: 

  • How to support the inclusion of disabled people in tennis
  • Inclusion and integration of players
  • Adapting communication styles to suit a range of audiences
  • An overview of several types of disability – sensory, physical and learning.
  • Where to go for further information and support

This course has been approved by the Tennis Foundation and LTA for 6 credits.
